During the global events and other bilateral/multilateral meetings, the world leaders also share personal and light-hearted moments. After all, diplomacy is not just about discussions and documents. A shared meal and friendly, ubiquitous banter helps to build rapport making diplomacy a bit easier.
Many such moments have become quite popular in the past as well. However, when it comes to meetings between Indian PM Modi and Italian PM Meloni, an entirely diverse discussion/rave begins in the social media. This phenomenon is popularly called "Melodi" — a ‘marriage’ of their names.
In December 2023, the two world leaders met for the COP28 in Dubai, where the Italian PM Giorgia Meloni posted a selfie with Indian PM Narendra Modi and captioned it "Good friends at COP28" with the hashtag #Melodi, which immediately caught the public attention and it started trending on various social media platforms. Their interactions appeared very warm and friendly at such occasions. Since the word 'Melodi' is a catchy one and people generally love human moments in politics, they found it amusing and entertaining.
The internet memes ‘couture’ further amplifies the media hype around it. Once a meme becomes popular, it keeps on reviving itself at any possible opportunity - organically! Recently, at G7 Summit at France in June 2026, PM Meloni jocundly referred to herself and PM Modi as the "most famous couple on Instagram”. A month ago, during his tour to Italy, PM Modi had gifted her popular ‘Melody’ toffees and the visuals of the video event became enormously popular all over the media causing a huge surge in the demand for this toffee. Instead of ignoring these memes, both leaders seem to have relished the joke beyond measure.
There seem to be a host of other reasons also people love to talk about them. PM Modi is one of the world's most recognized political leaders who has been leading India for the last 12 years — the longest elected Indian PM to have held this office; Italian PM Giorgia Meloni is the first female PM of Italy and is the head of the "Brothers of Italy" party. Her most important contribution is considered to deliver political stability at home in an otherwise fractured political landscape.
She is able to maintain a solid coalition and disciplined governance that has improved her country's prestige on world stage. The unemployment is significantly low and there is a return of confidence in business and trade in Italy. The news organization "Politico" recognized her as the ‘most powerful person’ in Europe. The Forbes in 2024 ranked her the third most powerful woman in the world and Time magazine called her as one of the most influential people.

There are many more interesting similarities between the two leaders. Both of them come from modest and humble backgrounds and had to face early struggles in life. If PM Modi had to sell tea at the railway station, PM Meloni had to work as a waitress and bartender during her youth. These two leaders entered social/political activism at young age and rose through their ranks due to hard work, discipline and dedication. Both the leaders are known to have strong nationalistic viewpoints and talk about civilizational values, cultural traditions and the national heritage. Above all, both leaders are living as single in their own ways!
While a large chunk of social media users in India are enjoying reading and watching their camaraderie, there are also jibes, taunts and criticism from the political opponents of PM Modi and critics from social media.
"This is not leadership, it's a farce, said opposition leader and partly-Italian himself Rahul Gandhi on the Melody toffee rave". Other social media criticism included: "Prime Minister or Influencer". "Such things don't carry any substance" and "Romance diplomacy", "Romeo diplomacy" for obvious reasons.
However, nobody would have thought that such lighter moments could also create diplomatic tensions between two countries, as seems to have happened between US and Italy.
President Trump claimed that PM Giorgia Meloni had ‘begged’ for a photograph with him. This was a highly provocative claim and unbecoming of the prestigious office he occupies. Prez. Trump is accustomed to being at the centre of media attention. Did he feel that his own media-centric image was being overshadowed by the Modi-Meloni narrative, which may have led him to make such a claim?
PM Meloni vehemently rejected the claim as "completely fabricated" and stated "Neither I nor Italy ever beg". Following this, Italy's Foreign Minister cancelled his visit to the US and several Italian political parties described it as an insult to their country.
Back home, it will be interesting to know what India’s very own 'bahu' (daughter-in-law) from Italy - Sonia Antonia Maino Gandhi thinks about the ongoing ‘Tarantella’ between Modi-Meloni.
