Group meets to discuss El Lugar Sin Límites
(The Place Without Limits) (Mexican/1978/110mins)
Dir. Arturo Ripstein. Adapted from a novel by
noted Chilean writer José Donoso
Yáñez with the same name, the film
explores homophobia and machismo in the Latin
American society. The story revolves around a
dilapidating whore house in a destitute town El
Olivo where the transvestite father Manuelita and
her sex worker daughter are divided over the issue
of sale of house. True to the cinematic
style of Arturo Ripstein, The Sky Without Limits
is a tragedy with doses of melodrama, dark humour,
rich red brown tones and poignant cinematography.
