Obama: ISIS
Strategy-fnbworld

US President Barack Obama has said that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is the product of US policies from the days of the Bush dynasty. This baldfaced admission is shorn of any feeling of remorse (given that Mr Obama will enjoy two full terms in office in the White House) and by directing his cannons at the Bush legacy he is obviously begun the campaign for the next Presidential elections  due in 2016. For the rest of the world sitting on the sidelines it would be instructive to understand the legacies of the Republicans (Bush) and Democrats (Clinton-Obama) and the current state of planet earth they will leave behind or inherit.

LEADING VILLAINS

During the Bush reign the Soviet Union collapsed under the constant hammering of its periphery by the US and its NATO allies. The result was unrelenting bloodletting in Europe leading to the disappearance of multi-ethnic Yugoslavia and an extensive redrawing of the map of Europe.  It was under the Bush dynastic rule that the seeds of Islamic fundamentalism were sown in the Afghanistan-Pakistan (Af-Pak) salient where Pakistan was the “frontline state” against the Soviet Army occupation of Afghanistan enjoying the panoply of modern weapons and billions in what military dictator Ziaul Haq once described as “peanuts”. Pakistan soon became the hothouse for the germination of the seed of the Saudi Arabian brand of Sunni Islam known as Wahabism. Its outgrowth was the Taliban and Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda and a host of splinter groups held together under the umbrella of United Jihad Council. It was in the Af-Pak belt that the plans were hatched to bomb the American heartland in 2001. The so-called Global War On Terror (GWOT) ensued. Instead of dousing the flames it poured gasoline on it. Democratic Party President Bill Clinton visited Pakistan (after India) in 2001 and used methods  to disguise his presence on Pakistan soil like using a decoy plane and deploying ground vehicles in a manner that the favourite weapon of the mujahideen, the rocket propelled grenade, would not be able to reach the aircraft he arrived in. Yet Clinton did not declare Pakistan as a state that nurtures terrorism!

Simultaneous with this sideshow, the dragonseed sown by the Bush family in Iraq blossomed. In radio broadcasts in February and March 1991, President George Bush Senior (H.W) instigated the Iraqi Shias in the south (the Marsh Arabs) and the Kurds in the north to rise up against Saddam Hussein. To put the analysis in context it is necessary to quote the first of the George Bush Senior’s broadcast to Iraq: “There is another way for the bloodshed to stop:and that is for the Iraqi military and the Iraqi people to take matters into their own hands and force Saddam Hussein, the dictator, to step aside and then comply with the United Nations’ resolutions and  rejoin the family of peace-loving nations.” In a separate broadcast from Saudi Arabia by the CIA controlled “Voice of Free Iraq Radio”, a former member of Saddam’s Baath Party told the Shia Marsh Arabs: “…honourable sons of the Tigris and the Euphrates, at these decisive moments of your life, and while facing the danger of death at the hands of foreign forces you have no option in order to survive and defend the homeland but put an end to the dictator and his gang of criminals.” At this instigation the Kurds in the north and the Shia Marsh Arabs in the south rose up and liberated many provinces. But in the absence of any American or coalition military intervention the rebellions were crushed within a month and massive reprisals against the Shias in the south led to the draining of their source of culture and livelihood, the marshes. The Bush family later said that they had never promised military intervention. True enough, but why instigate?

Abu Musab al zarqawi

As it turned out the real reason was not just Saddam Hussein but the destruction of the largely secular Baathist philosophy which prevailed in both Iraq and Syria. A Shia government was installed in Baghdad after the second Gulf War in 2003 when, under the false propaganda that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction including nuclear, biological and chemical warheads, the US led by George Bush II and its European allies bamboozled the United Nations into authorizing military action against Iraq. Unable to control the Sunni/Shia bloodletting that followed the Americans spread the turmoil into Syria (where too the secular Baath Party under Bashar Assad controlled the country) and made a swift exit in 2011 leaving a gaping political vacuum quickly filled by a Sunni Islamic fundamentalist named Abu Musab al-Zarqawi who had fought under Pakistan Army Inter-Services Intelligence in northern Afghanistan. After Zarqawi was killed in a drone strike inside Iraq there rose Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi who proclaimed himself as the new Khalifa of “Islamic State”.

Large portions of Iraq and Syria are controlled by the IS and all across west Asia the black flags of this terrorist organization are beginning to unfurl. The Mediterranean region has been infected and if Syria falls it will soon become difficult for trade to be conducted through the Suez Strait in the north. At the southern end of the Red Sea the state of Yemen has been captured by Shia militias believed to have the support of Iran. Aden has been captured and the President has fled the country.

All this has happened because the US-led coalition imprudently upturned the hour-glass of demography and set the time-bomb ticking. The world is a worse place than when it was on 9/11. The “family of peace-loving nations”, are bombing the wakes of the respective Sunni/Shia uprisings, too afraid to put their feet on the ground.
