Prophet's Protégés!

When the editorial team of Charlie Hebdo met in the morning on the fateful day, little did they know what horror lay ahead. Two Kalashnikovs toting Muslim Kouachi terror-brothers came and sprayed bullets killing nine of the staffers. They did that to avenge the insult of their prophet. ‘We will kill you to express our disagreement with you’ is the clear message of Islamist extremists time and again. This is believed to be the deadliest attack in France since 1961.

Charlie Hebdo editor Stephane Charbonnier, 47, had received death threats in the past and was living under police protection. French media have named the three other cartoonists killed in the attack as Cabu, Tignous and Wolinski, as well as Charlie Hebdo contributor and French economist Bernard Maris. The attack took place during the magazine's daily editorial meeting.

The masked attackers opened fire with assault rifles in the office and exchanged shots with police in the street outside before escaping by car. They later abandoned the car in Rue de Meaux, northern Paris, where they hijacked a second car. Witnesses recalled they heard the gunmen shouting "We have avenged the Prophet Muhammad" and "God is Great" in Arabic ("Allahu Akbar").

Terror has no religion – this is what the civilized, educated masses would like us to believe. But globally, terror does have an overwhelming Islamic footprint. It’s time to call a spade a spade - terror is now clearly religious. And it has an Islamic face. Looking away won’t help in fighting terrorism. Rather it will help it become stronger. Taslima Nasreen has recently tweeted that Islam should be declared a terrorists’ religion. Salman Rushdie also echoed similar sentiments. It is alleged, Islam was declared a terrorizing religion 1500 years ago; unfortunately the world is not realizing this fact. Richard Dawkins wrote “No, all religions are NOT equally violent. Some have never been violent, some gave it up centuries ago. One religion conspicuously didn’t.”

As the editorial of a magazine wrote “If the only means you can think of expressing your disagreement with some cartoons – however, unsavoury is murder, you need to be treated on your terms. And could we stop that facile ‘all are equal’ apology? Islamist fundamentalism is the greatest force of evil facing humanity.”

The dread of Islamism must be tackled with a combination of international cooperation and sanctions, a strict visa regime, impregnable borders between countries for infiltrators, a stricter enforcement of secularism in local administration of cities - to stop places of worship from turning into hideouts of rioters and mercenaries, a superior intelligence network penetrating every terror module and an end to opportunistic diplomacy and military action of NATO countries where they raise and foster rebel forces for myopic economic reasons and then slink away from their monsters when the virtual colonies headed by puppet governments turn unmanageable.

More than the terrorists, the terror apologists are doing more harm to humanity. Instead of a united voice against terrorism, theories are surfacing justifying these inhuman and cowardly acts. And, shamefully, the self-claimed secular liberals take the cake. Mani Shankar Aiyer of the Congress justified Islamic terror as backlash. And the liberal Indian media supported the murderous French brothers by saying Freedom of Speech should not cross the Lakshman Rekha. But Indian media has different yardsticks for different religions. While they justify playing with Hindu Gods as freedom of creative expression – Hussain’s obscene paintings of Goddesses Durga, Ganesh, Sita and  Saraswati and Lord Shiva as a rickshaw-puller pulling two burqa clad muslim women in PK – the Hindi movie, they strongly condemn cartoons on Prophet Mohammed as provocative. That truly is completely hypocritical and biased.

Hindus and most part of the world remains tolerant but for how long? How long can we let the Al-Qaeda, Baghdadis, Al Jawahiris, Boko Harams and Hafeez Saeeds go on freely - planning massacres of innocents? Be it New York, Madrid, Lagos, Sydney, Peshwar, France and most recently Baga in Nigeria - their demonic acts don’t cease. And there seems to be no deterrent.  We in India have suffered a lot, the West too is feeling the heat now.

Tolerance is the backbone of peace and is always desirable. But tolerating intolerance can get suicidal. Hope India and the world realizes it and takes the right course of action in a well concerted manner to rid the world of these Islamic demons soon.
